Villa del Balbianello. Bellagio’s stone harbor. The quiet road above Varenna where the water disappears into fog most mornings. Lake Como rewards patience — the light here changes by the hour, and knowing where to be, and when, is the difference between a beautiful photograph and an ordinary one.

Four hours is usually enough. Sometimes it’s the two of you and a boatman. Sometimes it’s a villa garden nobody else has access to that day. Either way, the lake does most of the work — I make sure you’re standing in the right place when it does.

Bellagio is the most famous — elegant harbor, beautiful gardens, the classic Como. Varenna is quieter and more photogenic for intimate shots — the stairs down to the water at Vezio Castle are extraordinary. Villa del Balbianello is the most cinematic backdrop on the lake but requires advance booking and has access restrictions. I’ll advise you on what’s realistic for your date and budget.
May and September are the sweet spot — mild temperatures, good light, manageable tourist numbers. June and July are beautiful but busy, especially around Bellagio. October has stunning misty mornings and autumn color around the lake — underrated for photography. I’m available April through October; I’ll help you choose the ideal month based on your aesthetic.
Yes — a private wooden boat on Lake Como is one of the most beautiful things you can do. Shooting from the water with the Alps and villas behind you gives you images that are impossible from the shore. I coordinate the boat as part of the planning; it’s quoted separately based on duration.
From Milan: direct train to Como San Giovanni (40 min), then ferry across the lake to Bellagio or Varenna. From other Italian cities: high-speed train to Milan, then as above. The ferry timetables are important — I’ll give you the exact schedule and meeting point once we’ve confirmed your location. I recommend arriving the evening before.
Villa del Balbianello is managed by FAI (Italy’s National Trust) and requires a special photography permit for professional shoots. Access is limited and needs to be arranged well in advance. It’s entirely possible — but requires planning. If this is a priority for you, mention it in your inquiry and I’ll let you know the current availability and requirements.
Hair and makeup is available as an add-on (+€500) with a trusted local artist on the lake. If you prefer to come ready from your hotel, that’s completely fine — the base package includes everything else.
