What Makes a Rome
Elopement Timeless

Rome · On choosing the eternal city

A timeless Rome elopement isn’t about the monument you choose — it’s about how you use the city. I’ve photographed elopements in Rome for years, and the couples who use it well come back with photographs they still look at decades later. The ones who treat it like a backdrop get photographs that look like postcards. The difference isn’t the monument — it’s the approach.

The difference

Rome rewards people who are paying attention. In fact, the light changes completely in an hour. The same street looks different at 7am and noon. The piazzas that fill with crowds in summer empty out by January. So working here well means knowing when to go where, and why.

A timeless Rome elopement is not about finding the “right” monument. It’s about the quality of the light, the quietness of the moment, and the discipline to ignore what everyone else is photographing.

“The photographs that last are the ones that could only have been made on that specific day, by those specific people.”

What I look for

I look for the moment when a couple stops being aware of the camera. It usually happens about forty minutes in, when the formality of being photographed has worn off and they’re actually just in Rome together. That’s when I get the photographs they’ll keep.

I also look for light that will not date. Harsh midday sun creates photographs that belong to a specific decade. Soft, directional morning light — the kind you get in Rome from October through March, before 10am — creates photographs that could have been made at any point in the last century. A timeless Rome elopement depends on this quality of light more than on any single location.
